Often referred to as “the clear alternative to braces,”Invisalign has been in use since the 2000s. However, many people are just now becoming aware of this thoroughly modern procedure. If you are considering Invisalign, you may have some questions. Here are the answers to the top questions about Invisalign.
How does Invisalign work?
The first step is to create a 3-D digital model of your existing smile. Your orthodontist will then show you what to expect at each stage of treatment. When you and your orthodontist are satisfied, a customized series of clear, comfortable, medical grade aligners will be created. You will wear each set of aligners for two weeks, or as directed, and then switch to the next set at home.
What are the benefits of Invisalign?
Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible, so no one needs to know that you are straightening your teeth. They are also removable, allowing you to eat, drink, and brush/floss/use mouthwash as normal. You will need to see your orthodontist just once every four to six weeks for monitoring. In addition, there are no wires or metal brackets to scratch or poke your mouth and tongue.
Can I use Invisalign if my teeth shifted after braces?
Many people who had braces in their teens discover that their teeth have slowly shifted in the years that followed. Invisalign is an excellent way to correct this issue without going through all the annoyances of braces again.
Does Invisalign work with porcelain veneers?
Like so many things in orthodontics, it depends. We will carefully assess your full dental picture, including the location of your veneers, and determine whether Invisalign is the right option for you.
I have a dental bridge. Can I get Invisalign?
Unfortunately, a dental bridge can be a complication with Invisalign treatment. Dental bridges connect the teeth to each other, while Invisalign works by moving each tooth individually. However, there are workarounds, and we will evaluate your current orthodontic needs and discuss your best options for treatment.
Can I eat, drink, chew gum, and smoke with Invisalign?
Invisalign is removable, so you can do whatever you like when your aligners are out. While you have them in, though, you need to be careful. Drinks that are sugary or acidic such as milk, soda, sports drinks and juices should be strictly avoided when wearing your aligners as the liquids can become trapped and erode the enamel on your teeth – stick to water. You should not eat while wearing your aligners, and should consider thoroughly brushing your teeth prior to putting the aligners in.
Smoking will not damage the aligners, but it could discolor them.
How much does Invisalign cost, and does insurance cover it?
The exact cost of Invisalign varies from patient to patient and is dependent on the degree of correction required. In general, though, Invisalign is in the same price range as braces. We will provide a full, transparent price breakdown that includes all office visits before we begin work.
Dental insurance is extremely complex and varies widely by plan. Some plans cover both braces and Invisalign. Some cover only braces. Some cover neither. In addition, you likely have an annual cap on how much your insurer will pay. Our experienced office staff will review your insurance information to determine your out of pocket costs.
